And the same-side vitriol of the more extreme against the slightly less extreme reminds me of the Freud “Narcissism of small differences” idea, or Frame’s “Machen’s Warrior Children” article.
In/out groups are desperate to distinguish themselves from those that are most like them in order to keep their self-ordained chosen status. And in turn, their attitude invites self-righteousness in (and, as you say, provides cover for) those who point to them as an extreme and reprehensible example of what true _______ should not be.
